Plockton is at the heart of the west Highlands and can be reached a number of ways by road, rail and air, as well as by inter-city coach, being located just under two hours west of Inverness.
By Road
Plockton is served by major trunk roads from both the north and east of Scotland as well as from the south. From Glasgow the A82 runs north towards Inverness, which connects at Invergarry with the A87 which heads north to Kyle of Lochalsh, the Skye Bridge, Portree and Uig. Many visitors arrive in Plockton via Kyle, some 6 miles west, through the villages of Duirinish, Erbusaig and Drumbuie, or to turn right at Balmacara on the A87, some 3 miles from Plockton. As an alternative via Inverness drivers should take the A835 towards Garve and Achnasheen, before taking the A890 past Strathcarron and Stromeferry and turn right towards Achmore.This is just a brief summary of the road routes to Plockton. By Rail
How many self-catering properties can boast their very own railway station? Plockton is served by trains to and from Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh, taking just over two hours from Inverness by modern diesel sprinter. There are usually four trains daily in the summer and three out of the main season. Full information is available from the First Group which operate the Scotrail services.Trains also serve Glasgow via Fort William to Mallaig which connect with the Calmac ferry to Armadale, in the south of Skye. Public transport then serves Kyle from Armadale and then Plockton although services and connections are generally infrequent and do make for a complicated journey. However, you do get to travel through some magnificent west coast scenery. The Jacobite Steam Train operates daily during the summer months from Fort William to Mallaig, popular with travellers and railway enthusiasts alike.
By Coach
Citylink operate three times daily services to Kyle from Inverness, and from Glasgow via Fort William. A public bus service operates from Kyle to Plockton but this is infrequent so we would suggest guests coming by coach should take a taxi. Rental car services are available in Kyle and in Mallaig.
By Air
Plockton is just under two hours by road from Inverness airport and around 5 hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports. There are frequent services from London Gatwick and London Luton to Inverness as well as services to Bristol and other regional airports.
